What should you remember?
- GitHub's documentation describes Copilot as an AI assistant built into GitHub that suggests code, answers questions, reviews changes, and works on tasks you assign.
- Its agentic side can research a repository, propose a plan, edit files, run tools, and prepare a pull request for you to review; you remain responsible for approving.
- CrabiX is not tied to GitHub or one model vendor: it runs agents on the providers you connect and keeps the same rules on all of them.
- CrabiX Launch lists copilot and vscode integrations, and vscode starts VS Code Copilot Chat against the CrabiX endpoint.
When is GitHub Copilot the better choice?
GitHub Copilot is the better choice when your work lives in GitHub and your editor and you want AI inside that flow: suggestions while you type, chat about the codebase, pull request summaries, and tasks handed to an agent.
Its documentation lists inline suggestions, answers and explanations, code review of pull requests, and agentic work that prepares changes for your review.
It supports customizations such as instructions, reusable prompts, repository context, external tools, agent skills, and custom agents, and MCP servers and third-party coding agents can work alongside it.
Administrators control who has access, which features are available, and which files Copilot cannot see, and can review usage data and audit logs.
When is CrabiX the better choice?
CrabiX is the better choice when you want to manage agents on your own machine across any model: set how much freedom each agent gets, approve risky steps, see every action, and organize agents into teams.
Autonomy levels from read-only to full access, approvals, queue and steer, and an execution trail apply on every model. Edits appear as diffs the app can undo.
AI Corp adds AI employees with goals, issues, routines, and monthly budgets. See agents and the AI workspace.
CrabiX routes across your own providers and local models with fallback, so work does not depend on a single vendor's plan.
Can I use Copilot and CrabiX together?
Yes. Keep Copilot in your editor and on GitHub. CrabiX Launch lists copilot and vscode as integrations, and the vscode integration starts VS Code Copilot Chat against the CrabiX endpoint, so those requests can use your own providers.
Changes from either tool end up in the same working tree, because CrabiX works on your project folder through Git, a file explorer, and a terminal.
See CrabiX Launch for how integrations back up native configuration before changing it.
How do the costs compare?
GitHub Copilot is sold as Free, paid, Business, and Enterprise plans; check GitHub's plans page for current terms. CrabiX is $21 per month or $189 per year after a 7-day free trial, plus the providers you connect.
CrabiX adds no markup on tokens; see the pricing page.
GitHub says paid plans include increased access to models, so the two bill for different things: Copilot for its hosted service, CrabiX for the app while you pay your own model providers.
Which should I pick, GitHub Copilot or CrabiX?
Pick by whether your work lives in GitHub or on your machine.
Pick Copilot if you want AI inside GitHub and your editor: suggestions, chat, pull request review, and tasks handed to an agent.
Pick CrabiX if you want to run and control agents on any model on your own machine.
Use both: Copilot in the editor and on GitHub, CrabiX for agents and teams; crabix launch vscode points VS Code Copilot Chat at the CrabiX endpoint.
What should I know before using CrabiX alongside Copilot?
CrabiX does not run inside GitHub's website.
Pull request review and issue assignment inside GitHub stay with Copilot; CrabiX works with Git and the gh command-line tool locally.
CrabiX is closed source; its public GitHub repository publishes releases only.
The 7-day free trial starts the first time you sign in to the desktop app. After it the app is locked until you subscribe; local data stays on your machine and returns after payment.
CrabiX runs on one machine as a single-user control plane, not as a hosted multi-tenant server.
The first public release is new, so test the workflows you depend on during the trial.
How do I try CrabiX next to Copilot?
Use both on one repository for the trial week.
1. Install CrabiX and run crabix launch vscode to point VS Code Copilot Chat at the CrabiX endpoint.
2. Run one task as a CrabiX agent in the project folder.
3. Compare the changes, the approvals you were asked for, and the cost.
4. Keep Copilot for GitHub-side work if it earns its place.
